If you downgrade from a paid plan to a free account, you will lose access to certain features as well as lower account limits. You can view an overview of what you get with a paid account versus a free account in this article and on our pricing page.
Here's what you can expect when your subscription ends:
- The number of your active projects will be limited to 5.
- The number of custom filters will be limited to 3.
- You'll be able to view the activity log for the past 7 days.
- Backups will no longer be generated automatically, and you won’t be able to create new ones.
What happens to my features?
If you are above the free project limit when you downgrade, any project that goes above the free limit will become view-only projects.
A view-only project cannot be edited and you will not be able to add any new tasks to it. However, you can still delete or archive the project.
Todoist will automatically make projects view-only according to the creation date.
For example, if you are on the Pro plan with 10 personal projects and you then downgrade to the free plan (which has a limit of 5 personal projects), your 5 oldest projects will become view-only.

View-only projects will be marked with an exclamation mark icon in your sidebar. Furthermore, if you open a view-only project, you will see a banner which will identify it as a view-only project.
You can either upgrade to a paid plan or you can bring your account under the free project limits by archiving and/or deleting projects.
On the free plan, you can have up to 3 custom filters. When you downgrade, your filter data will be retained, however, you won’t be able to view the filter content until you upgrade to a paid subscription.
When you downgrade to the free plan, all your task-related data will be retained, but you won’t be able to add or edit features like Duration, Pro Reminders, Deadlines, and Member roles (in workspaces). However, you will be able to remove them as long as the task is part of an active project that is not view-only.
Once you downgrade, you'll be able to view the activity log for the past 7 days. All data in your account’s activity log becomes available again as soon as you resubscribe.
Backups will no longer be generated automatically, and you won’t be able to create new ones. You will still have access to up to 21 backups that were created before canceling.
This depends on your account:
- If you are the one downgrading, the project may become view-only for you (depending on how old the project is and how many projects you have in your account).
- If your collaborator downgrades and you remain on the paid plan, you will still have full access to the project, while the project may become view-only for your collaborator (depending on how old the project is and how many projects they have in their account)
Yes, these tasks will still be included in your filters.
No, you won’t be able to specifically filter for view-only projects. That being said, you can see in your sidebar which projects are view-only.
Yes, you can still receive reminders that you set up before you downgraded.
Yes. Seeing as your collaborator is using the project as an active project, they can still perform actions which you might get notifications for.
What happens to my billing and subscriptions?
Yes, you can create a second team workspace while your first team workspace is on the Business plan trial.
If you have paid for Pro and you start a Business plan trial before using your full Pro time, your remaining Pro time will be added as credit in our system. However, please note that this credit can only be used to pay for Pro subscriptions.
Your team workspace will stay on the Business plan trial until the trial period is finished.
The same team workspace can only go through one Business plan trial. If you set up a second team workspace, you can start a new Business plan trial for that workspace.
